York Heritage Trust matches fashions for royal wedding

County Heritage Trust at 250 E. Market St. in York City.

The exhibit features local wedding dresses from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s and details how they match royal

wedding styles for the same eras.

For example, a wedding dress worn in New Freedom in 1926 -- by Mildred Jessie Baughman in her marriage to John George Bulcken Jr. -- was compared to a similarly styled wedding dress worn in 1923 by Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon who married Prince Albert, Duke of York.

The duke unexpectedly became King George VI when his brother, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne.

Both wedding gowns were simple in style and fabric and were not form fitting, although the royal wedding dress had some fabric design. But during that era, long and elaborately styled veils "took center stage" to compensate for the dresses, according to Brown.

The exhibit also features men's wedding garb, including military uniforms, suits and accessories. Other items include bridal shoes from 1903, an 1881 wedding portrait and wedding bands, cake toppers and invitations.
