“A lot of the time they walked in, I married them, and they left,” Howard said. At one such service at his home, “My last words were ‘Now you may kiss the bride.’ The groom said, “ ‘Do I have to?’ I was sort of at a loss for words.”
Once, in the clerk’s office, “The bride wanted more of a wedding. Walked into the bathroom, put on a wedding dress and walked down the inside stairway. The groom met her at the bottom.”
Howard was once called to a field by Meetze Road, south of Warrenton. “The people wanted to be married in a hot-air balloon. I had never been up in one, and took my grandson along. It was 98 degrees and there wasn’t sufficient lift [for four] so I performed the service next to the gondola. Then they took off.”
In a longer wedding ceremony with a reception, Howard married a pop recording artist. Before the catered ceremony at Maple View estate, north of Leesburg, “the bride asked if I had a tuxedo. I said no. She wanted to see my suits. I had three: brown, navy and a canary yellow. I showed them to her. She chose the yellow one.
